RESPONSIBLE E-WASTE RECYCLING

A conversation with Karo Sambhav, lets 'Make it Possible'

What’s on your list-to-buy this week – the latest mobile phone, laptop or smart TV? How truly do you need it though? The lure of new gadgets (courtesy super effective marketing techniques) and need to keep up with the Joneses isn’t just making us spend on we might not be necessary but also adding to environmental and health hazards.

With nearly 82% of its e-waste being personal devices, India ranks amongst the five largest producers of e-waste globally. The country generated nearly 2 million tonnes in 2016 which is expected to reach 5.2 million by 2020. Only 20% of the global e-waste is recycled and in India less than 2% is responsibly recycled through formal channels.

What happens to your discarded old laptops and phones once traded for a swanky new one? What is a producer’s responsibility towards effective management of such waste? Are there any sustainable methods of reuse or recycling to ensure minimum detrimental impact on the environment?

The Swedish Chamber of Commerce India invites you to a conversation with Mr. Pranshu Singhal, Founder of Karo Sambhav to understand more about how we can contribute towards sustainable management of personal e-waste, corporates’ roles and Extended Producer Responsibility. Karo Sambhav is a social enterprise, developing financially viable systemic solutions by collaborating with disintegrated players across the e-waste value chain. They have set up systems to create awareness on e-waste and drive long term behavioural change in society, to collect e-waste, and to responsibly recycle it. They work with thousands of informal sector waste pickers/aggregators and are enabling sustainable livelihoods.

This event is the second in the Chamber’s endeavour to bring awareness and work towards being environmentally conscious and responsible. We were conversed earlier this year with Ms. Bharati Chaturvedi from the New Delhi-based NGO, Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group.
